I have a question for your both to discuss and give advice on. ….I am an American and have been dating my Ukrainian boyfriend for a long time. Would it be appropriate in your culture to propose marriage to him or wait for him to do it? I think he is too shy to do this because he is a sweet boy from the village and not very rich, but I love him anyway.

now when you are saying long tiem i need to make sure may be you are talking six month? or may be eight month? sometime it okay for ukraine man to may be take year to propose (and soem time quicker to divorce ha ha! but not as quack as americans because they don not marry in orthodox churhc). so be keeping waiting. if he do not propose after yar then take his lada or his favorite white shoes and go to dnieprpetrovsk and call him on telefon and then he will be begging you coming back and then you can persude him to be marrying you! then you can marry. or just find new boyfriend (may be you are beatiful? them be calling mme please!) thanks jandoe for question.

DIMA SAYS: You say you been with boy a long time – what is a long time I ask?  One week, one month, 10 year?  American in Ukraine are like very very much. If he does not propose since one week then he is a little strange. You know, Ukraine tradition is engage minimum one week then marriage.  Please know this for your preparations.  In Ukraine village, tradition says man goes to girl’s house in the village with some older mens and they asks for her to marry him.  Also they change some breads.  So, you Jane, well you can propose – yes?  You must take some babushka friends with you to his village.  He can say no, but you know, he is Ukraine man and you is American lady so I am thinking he say yes very quick.  So you must starting to bake some bread.
